Dan Davies

Author/Artist

About me image
Dan Davies is a left-handed semi-domesticated mammal. He attempts socio-cultural interaction through literature, art, and music, though in truth, he is somewhat anti-social and refuses to join the Twitters.

His first love is the natural environment, and after devoting decades of toil to the revegetation of degraded landscapes, his body no longer tolerates repetitive manual labour, hence the need for his imagination to share the challenge of sustaining an existence.

He began writing for people in 2022 and can be found as a finalist in the 2022 Newcastle Short Story Awards Anthology, shortlisted for the 2022 E.M Fletcher Writing Competition, amongst the winners of the Writers Playground One-Year Anniversary Challenge 2022, and winner of the 2022 New England Thunderbolt Prize for Crime Writing Emerging Author Award (also commended in the Fiction category).

He likes stories that entertain and provoke thought. He may be somewhat old fashioned in the sense that he believes a story should contain, as a bare minimum, a beginning, middle, and end.

Vuthsanya

Here is a little story I wrote decades ago when I was 22. It came into being as a result of a challenge issued by my mother. She asked if I could write a feminist story with a female protagonist without constituting her as an object of the male gaze. She ended up using this story in one of her many books for which I have provided the following reference;

Davies, D. 1993. Vuthsanya. In B. Davies, Shards of Glass. Children Reading and Writing Beyond Gendered Identities. Routledge. Pp. 190-192.

I am currently working on a short novel that tells of the missing years of Vuthsanya - in between the beginning and the end of this story.
